Barbara Shilo | Pieced Together

Barbara Shilo (1923-2015) came to the US from early Nazi Germany in 1938 at the age of 15. Her family supported her efforts to pursue her passion in the arts - studying acting, writing, and painting at New York University and the Arts Student League. In 1956, she went on to study psychology at the New School for Social Research while establishing herself as a painter throughout New York State and the country. Best known for her exhibit, Silent Voices Speak, a vivid depiction of Jewish life leading up to and during the Holocaust, she was also known for her evocative paintings using real and symbolic subject matter to express her concerns for social justice. Here, we see some of Shilo's mixed media works.
