About the Artist
This is a work by photographer Eugene “Gene” Spatz (1943-2003).
Spatz was a pioneer of the paparazzi movement in America. A keen observer from a very young age, he wielded his camera to give the public captivating and humane insight into the fabulous lives of New York, Hollywood and other celebrities during the 1970s and 80s. He also focussed his lens on street scenes – and the real people who populated the streets of New York in the same period. Spatz is unique among those who followed the club and street life at that time by being trusted for his low-key consideration of his subjects. As a result his images are especially intimate and interesting.
